Writer's Block: Miss Manners

Putting MP3 players on mobile phones, so that people inflict their taste in music on others on public transport. Worse yet, the music is so compressed that even the best pieces of music sound tinny and thin.
I don't want to hear other people's crappy taste in music, I have crappy taste in music of my own thankyouverymuch, and at least it's played into my ears on a Sony ATRAC player and is thus not compressed to the point of utter distortion!

It comes from the dark mists of time :)
Seriously though, about 15 years ago, I acquired a nickname from a friend, Kate, who observed that by merely being in a room I could cause chaos. I have no idea why, perhaps it's an in-built talent ;) Anyway, she had commented after a particularly silly set of events, that 'pandemonium broke out where ever I went'. I was casting around for a name for my clothing company, and we decided to use that, but being pretentious and goffffycke (see the spelling? see what I did there? ;D ) we looked up the etymology - actually we looked it up to check the spelling! - and discovered the older spelling 'Pandaemonaeum', which is a 15th Century treatise on demonology. I couldn't resist the name, and swiped it.
However, we discussed this drunkenly in the Little A in Whitby, next to some people I know from the town ;) and one of them, having just bought a gothic clothing shop, remembered hearing the name, thinking it was cool, and used it. Poor Lara, she was so horrified to know it was what I had intended to call my clothing company! :o

Writer's Block: Down on Memory Lane
Feb. 12th, 2009 12:36 am[Error: unknown template qotd]It's really vivid. I would have been about 3, judging by the content of the memory. My Aunt Cathy was pushing my younger sister, Tracey, up and down her hallway in an old-fashioned Silver Cross pram, singing "The White Cliffs of Dover" (one of my aunt's favourite songs). Tracey was wailing the place down. I was standing in the kitchen, with Tizer in a plastic tumbler. I still remember that the tumbler was red with white polka dots, and can smell the plastic cup.
It's an odd thing to remember, really.

I love this film, it's one of my favourites. I don't usually like Christmas films - they're either made for children, or are so maudlin I can't stand them. The message of this film is that one person can make one hell of a difference, which I love.

I don't think it's anything but an interesting coincidence. I think when Stoker was researching "Dracula", the birthday may have struck him as interesting or amusing, but I don't think it unduly influenced him. His interest mainly lay in Dracula's name, his links with Transylvania, and his bloodthirsty reputation.
